Our home…

We frequently get asked ‘where is drin pottery?’ and ‘where does the name drin pottery originate from?’.  Well it’s the same answer to both questions.

drin pottery is located in the townland of Mullaghdrin, just outside Dromara in County Down, at the foot of Slieve Croob.  We’re reliably informed that Mullaghdrin translates as ‘Hill of the Hawthorne’, with drin meaning ‘hill’.  drin pottery takes its name from its rural location sited on top of the hill, at the bottom of the mountain.

drin pottery’s logo is a hawthorne blowing in the wind, and every piece of pottery is stamped with our hawthorne showing you its uniqueness.  (A little known fact is that our logo was designed by renowned artist Derek Melville, so in a way each time you buy a piece of drin pottery you get another piece of art – pretty good value we think).

Mullaghdrin was originally known as Singer’s mountain, named after a local resident many years ago.  Local folklore tells us that when Old Man Singer died and his funeral procession slowly marched down the hill all the crows lined up in the hedges along the roadside until the coffin passed.  When our potter Jenny moved to drin pottery on her first morning she was awakened by a tapping at the window.  On pulling back the curtain she saw a large black crow sitting on the windowsill.  The crow remained motionless for seconds before silently flying away.

Our heritage and location is integral to our design and provides daily inspiration to Jenny.
